This Tefillin looked fine on the outside, but moisture had subtly warped the base. Regular inspections are crucial to ensure they remain Kosher.
A friend of mine, who teaches Hilchot Tefillin, asked his students to bring in their Tefillin for inspection. One of the boys handed him a pair that looked fine at first glance—but upon closer inspection, the bottom of the Tefillin shel rosh wasn’t a perfect square. It wasn’t torn or broken. But the shape had subtly warped due to consistent moisture from wet hair and hair gel. And when the bottom isn’t a true square, the Tefillin can become פסול (invalid), since one of the essential halachic requirements is that the Batim remain רבוע – perfectly square. In this case, the Tefillin were Gassos—made from thick leather—and can likely be repaired by an experienced Batim Macher. But in some cases, moisture doesn’t stop at the surface. It can damage the ink of the Parshiyot inside, which may require replacement or invalidate the Tefillin entirely.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 “𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹” 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀The Aruch HaShulchan (Orach Chaim 39:15) rules that Tefillin must be checked twice every seven years, even if worn daily. That means every 3.5 years, your Tefillin should be professionally inspected—because even if everything looks fine externally, problems can slowly develop that aren’t visible to the untrained eye.
