Mezuzah house calls

MEZUZAH
HOUSE CALLS

We come to your home, carefully remove and inspect each mezuzah. We also make sure every mezuzah in your home is properly placed according to halacha before securely reinstalling it.

HOW THE VISIT WORKS

One appointment. Nothing left for you to do.

We handle the entire process from removing each mezuzah through inspection, reporting, proper placement, and reinstallation.

STEP 1 /4

WE REMOVE

Every mezuzah is carefully taken down and labeled so we know exactly which doorway it came from.

STEP 2 /4

WE INSPECT

Each klaf is removed from its case and examined letter by letter under magnification for cracks, fading, touching letters, and other issues.

STEP 3 /4

WE REPORT

You receive a placement report for the home and a quality report for every klaf we inspect, including anything that needs attention or replacement.

STEP 4 /4

WE REINSTALL

We review every doorway in the home, including doorways that may be missing a mezuzah, and make sure each mezuzah is reinstalled in the proper halachic location.

Loaner mezuzot available. Your doorposts do not need to be left bare while your mezuzot are being checked.

What gets checked

Four things go wrong with a mezuzah. We look at all four.

People assume a mezuzah is either kosher or it isn't. In practice, most of what we find is damage that developed quietly over years — and almost none of it is visible through the case.

The letters

Ksav and kashrus

Every klaf comes out of its case and is read by a sofer under magnification. Ink cracks and flakes with age, and a single letter that has split or closed up can render the whole klaf pasul.

  • Missing, broken, or touching letters
  • Cracked and flaking ink
  • Letters formed incorrectly to begin with
  • The letters on the reverse side
The parchment

Damage to the klaf

Heat, cold, and moisture do most of the destroying. Front doors, garage entries, basements, and doorposts in direct sun are where we find the worst of it.

  • Moisture, mold, and staining
  • Fading and heat warping
  • Tearing and holes at the fold
  • Klaf stuck to the inside of the case
The case

What it's sitting in

A beautiful case can be the reason a klaf is ruined. Sealed cases trap condensation, loose ones let water in, and outdoor doors need protection most cases don't provide.

  • Case fit, seal, and drainage
  • Waterproofing for outdoor doorposts
  • Double-wrapping where required
  • Cracked or broken cases replaced
The doorway

Where it's hanging

A perfectly kosher klaf on the wrong doorpost isn't doing its job. We review every doorway in the house and correct placement while we're there.

  • Side, height, and angle for that doorway
  • Doorways that need one and don't have one
  • Doorways that never needed one
  • Loose, rattling, or badly mounted cases

Why the house call matters

A kosher klaf in the wrong spot is still a problem.

A mezuzah is only doing its job if it's on the right doorpost, in the right position. The halachos of placement are more involved than most people realize — there are general rules, and then a long list of situations where the answer comes out differently. Room size, how a space is actually used, which room counts as the one you're entering, and the way a particular doorway is built can all change it.

None of that can be worked out from a photo or a phone call. It's the reason we come to the house instead of asking you to mail us an envelope.

  • Which doorways need one at all — and which ones never did.
  • Which post, and where on it, for that particular doorway.
  • How your minhag applies — we hang according to yours, not ours.
  • The doorways that aren't standard — archways, closets, basements, garages, additions.
  • The ones that are a real shailah — flagged for your rav rather than guessed at.
KITCHEN DINING FOYER BEDROOM WALK-IN CLOSET ? ? ? ? ? FRONT DOOR each doorway is its own question

Five doorways in one house, and five separate questions. The closet, the archway, and the bedroom are the ones we most often find wrong.

Questions we get

Before you book.

How often do mezuzot actually need checking?

The widely followed practice is twice in seven years — roughly every three and a half years. Mezuzot on outside doors, in humid basements, or in direct sun should be looked at more often, because the damage there is environmental and can happen fast. If yours haven't been checked since you moved in, that's usually reason enough to book.

Do the mezuzot leave my house?

Yes. A proper check means the klaf comes out of the case, and is read by a sofer under magnification — that isn't something done standing in a hallway. We label every klaf by door so it goes back exactly where it came from, and we put loaner mezuzot up before we leave so no doorway sits empty.

How long until I get them back?

For most homes we return and re-affix within a few days. If a klaf needs repair, we'll tell you what's wrong, what it costs, and how long it will take, and you decide before anything is touched.

What are the two reports?

The placement report covers the house: every doorway we looked at, whether it requires a mezuzah, whether what's on it is in the right spot, and anything missing. The quality report covers the klaf: each mezuzah listed by the door it came off, with its condition and its status — kosher, repairable, or pasul. Between the two you have a written record of where your house stands, which is also what you'll want the next time it's due.

What does a house call cost?

It depends on how many mezuzos you have and where the house is. Send the form or call us and we'll give you an exact number before we come out — no surprises at the door, and nothing repaired or replaced without your approval first.

What if you find a mezuzah is pasul?

We show you exactly what's wrong. Some problems are repairable by a sofer; others mean the klaf is finished and needs replacing. We carry new mezuzos at several levels of hiddur so you can replace on the spot, but there's no pressure to buy from us — plenty of people take the findings and go elsewhere, and that's fine.

Can you tell me which doorways in my house need a mezuzah?

That's a large part of what the visit is for. Closets, archways, garage entries, finished basements, laundry rooms, and doorways between two rooms are the ones people most often get wrong, because the answer turns on details of that particular house rather than a single rule. Where something is genuinely a shailah, we'll say so and point you to your rav rather than guess.

Do you do shuls, schools, and offices?

Regularly. Institutional buildings have dozens of doorways and almost always have gaps. We do full walk-throughs with an itemized report for a board or building committee, and we can schedule around a building's hours.

We're closing on a new house. When should you come?

Before you move. A new house requires mezuzot the day you move in. Only when you rent do you have 30 days to install. We do a lot of pre-move-in work across the Five Towns, Great Neck, and Teaneck.
