I was recently called to a home in a well-known Jewish community in Long Island to inspect the mezuzot. As soon as I examined the first mezuzah at the entrance, I had to deliver some difficult news to the owner:
“I do not want to waste your time or money. All the mezuzot in this house are pasul (invalid).”
The owners were understandably shocked and frustrated. They asked me to explain what was wrong and why I was so certain they weren’t kosher.
The Alarming Discovery
To demonstrate, I removed the mezuzah nearest to where we were standing. I had not yet opened it, but it was already obvious to me that it would have a similar issue. What I showed them was truly alarming. It was the worst mezuzah I had found in over 30 years of inspections.
The scroll inside wasn’t written on parchment—it was printed on regular paper. To make matters worse, when I flipped the scroll over, it said in large English letters: “NOT KOSHER.”

Lesson Learned
Never assume that a mezuzah is kosher just because it came from a Judaica store. Mezuzot must be hand-written by certified sofrim on kosher parchment to meet halachic standards.
