From the Sofer's Workshop: A House Call with a Surprising Discovery

Rabbi Moshe Gantz

I was recently called to a home where the owner, feeling uneasy about his mezuzot, requested a full inspection. He had recently purchased about a dozen mezuzot from a local Judaica store but couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.

Upon arrival, I began my inspection, carefully removing the klaf from each mezuzah case. As I moved from room to room, I also discovered that eight locations were missing mezuzot entirely.

The mezuzot he had purchased were of a decent size—12 cm (nearly 5 inches)—which is typically a good sign for readability and quality. However, when I examined the scrolls in my workshop, I discovered that every single mezuzah was pasul (invalid)!

Fortunately, the flaws were correctable. After making the necessary adjustments, I was able to return and reinstall the mezuzot, ensuring that the home now had fully kosher mezuzot in place. Lesson learned:

Even mezuzot purchased from reputable Judaica stores may not be kosher. It’s essential to buy from experts in the field of STaM (Sifrei Torah, Tefillin, and Mezuzot), who are knowledgeable about halachic standards and quality assurance.

At KosherKlaf.com, our staff has checked and verified over 250,000 mezuzot. If you've ever wondered whether your mezuzot meet halachic standards, feel free to reach out. We’re here to help with all your checking and purchasing needs! For reliable and 100% Kosher guaranteed Mezuzahs click here.
