A friend of mine, who teaches Hilchot Tefillin, asked his students to bring in their Tefillin for inspection. One of the boys handed him a pair that looked fine at first glanceโbut upon closer inspection, the bottom of the Tefillin shel rosh wasnโt a perfect square. It wasnโt torn or broken. But the shape had subtly warped due to consistent moisture from wet hair and hair gel. And when the bottom isnโt a true square, the Tefillin can become ืคืกืื (invalid), since one of the essential halachic requirements is that the Batim remain ืจืืืข โ perfectly square. In this case, the Tefillin were Gassosโmade from thick leatherโand can likely be repaired by an experienced Batim Macher. But in some cases, moisture doesn't stop at the surface. It can damage the ink of the Parshiyot inside, which may require replacement or invalidate the Tefillin entirely.

That means every 3.5 years, your Tefillin should be professionally inspectedโbecause even if everything looks fine externally, problems can slowly develop that arenโt visible to the untrained eye.
